Paul Selden gained his first degree in Geology and Zoology at the
University of Manchester, UK, and then went on to the University of
Cambridge to study for a doctorate under Professor Harry B.
Whittington. After a year and a half teaching at the University of
London, Paul returned to Manchester, first in the Extra-Mural
Department, organizing outreach programs, and later moving into the
Department of Earth Sciences. He left Manchester in 2005 and was
Scientific Associate in the Department of Palaeontology, Natural
History Museum, London, before joining the Institute as its Director
on January 1st 2007. Paul's wife Maura left her post as Deputy
Principal at a London City Academy to move to Lawrence, while
daughter Jennie is a fashion designer and lives in London.
Jill Hardesty joined the Paleontological Institute in May 1989 as a research assistant in charge of word processing, library research, compiling computer range charts, and other miscellaneous duties. In 1994 she was promoted to Assistant Editor for Text. She is currently editing the Carboniferous and Permian ammonite Treatise, having just finished volume 6 of the brachiopod Treatise. Jill has a BS in Secondary Education (5/88), a BA in French (5/89), and an MA in the History of Art (10/92), all from The University of Kansas. She is married to Mike Cormack and they have two great daughters, 16-year-old Emma and 13-year-old Anna. Jill enjoys traveling, reading, running, and especially spending time with her family.
Mike Cormack first studied music as an undergraduate then eventually went on to obtain a BA in History and Philosophy (1989), MA in Philosophy (1992), and PhD in Philosophy studying under Professor Thomas M. Tuozzo (1999) all from the University of Kansas. For several years he taught introductory philosophy and ethics classes at Missouri Western State College. Mike has been working at the Paleo Instisute since 1999 in the capacity of Information Specialist. He is responsible for all things web related at the Paleo Institute as well as the International Palaeontological Association web site and the PALAIOS web site. Mike is the author of Plato's Stepping Stones: Degrees of Moral Virtue, published by Continuum International Publishing Group (2006). Mike is married to Jill Hardesty and they have two wonderful daughters, Emma 16 and Anna 13.
Denise Mayse earned a BS in Business Administration in 1980 from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Denise joined the PI staff in the spring of 2001 an currently is the department's Office Assistant/Research Assistant. Denise's husband Tim is a welder/assembler for a bakery equipment company. They have 3 children. Kyle is 24 and works full-time, Zachary is 20 and also has a full-time job, and Hannah is 17 and a High School Senior who will be taking her CNA training during the spring semester 2009. Denise enjoys reading and walking in her spare time.
